Privacy Policy

TempoTutor is a private teaching app. A music teacher runs a Studio; students join by invitation only and study lessons, materials, and songs, and everyone communicates in chat threads. This policy explains what personal data TempoTutor handles and why.

Who is responsible for your data

The data controller is Socraates Technologies Ltd, 21 Beach Green, Shoreham-by-Sea, BN43 5YG, United Kingdom. Questions about your data: info@socraates.com.

What we collect

• Your display name and email address (used to sign you in and identify you within your Studio).
• A device token stored on your device, which keeps you signed in.
• Chat messages you send in your Studio's threads.
• Media and documents you upload or that are shared with you: photos, audio recordings, and PDF documents.
• Lesson and schedule information: your lessons, repertoire, and lesson times.
• Your age band (students only): when you join, we ask for the student's birth month and year. We use it to work out one thing: whether the student is under 13, or 13 or over. We do not keep the birth month or year. We keep only the age band. For a student under 13, we also keep a date 12 months later, when we ask again. The age band only decides whether app-usage analytics is on. Your teacher cannot see it. You can change it in your profile.
• App-usage analytics: on teacher accounts, and on student accounts aged 13 or over, the app sends Google Analytics for Firebase a record of how the app is used: when it is opened, which screens are used, and for how long. With it we send the app and phone software version, the phone model, and the app language. Google also works out an approximate region (such as a country or city) from the internet address. Each phone has a random identifier for this, which we reset when you sign out. Analytics never includes your name, email address, messages, lesson content, recordings, photos or documents, and the app never collects an advertising identifier. Analytics is always off for students under 13, and for students who have not told us their age.

TempoTutor has no self-signup: you can only join a Studio using a one-time invitation from the teacher.

How we use it

We use your data to provide your Studio's features: signing you in, delivering chat, lessons, songs, scheduling, and push notifications. We use app-usage analytics only to measure how much the app is used, and how that changes over time (for teachers, this includes how they set up their Studio). We do not use it for advertising, we do not use it to personalise anything, and we do not build profiles of individual users. We do not show advertising inside the app, and we do not sell your personal data.

Who processes it on our behalf

We use a small number of infrastructure providers purely to run the service:

• Microsoft Azure: database and file storage (media is held as files; the database stores only references and text).
• Resend: sending sign-in and invitation emails.
• Expo and Google Firebase Cloud Messaging: delivering push notifications to your device.
• Google Analytics for Firebase: measuring app usage, as described above. Google processes this pseudonymous data for us. We have switched off advertising features, Google signals, and the sharing of this data with Google's advertising products.

These providers process data only to deliver those functions for us, not for their own purposes.

How long we keep it

We keep your data for as long as you are a member of a Studio. When you leave or your account is deleted, your identifying details are removed; messages you posted may remain in the Studio's history under an anonymised label so the teacher's teaching record stays intact.

Google keeps detailed app-usage analytics for 2 months. After that, only totals remain, which do not identify any phone.

Your rights

You have the right to access, correct, or delete your personal data. You can delete your account and personal data at any time from within the app: open your profile and choose "Delete my account". If you have uninstalled the app, email info@socraates.com from your account's email address and we will action it. For access or correction, email us. If you are in the UK or EU, you also have the right to complain to a supervisory authority; in the UK, the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO), ico.org.uk.

To turn analytics off for a student, change the age band in the profile to "Under 13". If you are a parent or guardian, or a student, and you want analytics data deleted, email info@socraates.com. Because analytics data is linked only to the random identifier on the phone, we may need your help to find it on the device.

Children

Students may be children. A student joins only when their teacher invites them. We ask for the student's birth month and year when they join; a parent can answer for the student. We do not collect app-usage analytics from students under 13. We ask teachers to tell parents when they invite a student.

This is a private, invitation-only app used by a small teaching studio. This policy is current as of the date above and may be updated as the app develops; material changes will be reflected here.
